Alex's parents and annoying little sister have just left to spend the weekend with Uncle Paul in Warren, Illinois, and Alex is looking forward to a weekend doing whatever he wants. Alex is playing computer games when something hits his house and starts a fire. Alex barely escapes with his life and finds refuge with his neighbors Darren and Joe, where he learns that a supervolcano has erupted covering his town in darkness and ash. Alex begins on a dangerous trek to find his family. On the way Alex runs into people who have turned to violence to survive, now Alex and his traveling partner Darla must find a way to survive the volcano and the violence. A great story about fear, family, and survival you won't want to put down. (Young Adult)
