Each book spotlights a different dragon, and this one is about Septimus, the frightening black dragon. Septimus, disguised as a human, attends an auction to purchase the magical Gilean's Cup. But just when Septimus believes the magic chalice to be his finally, a betrayal causes him to be outbid. In his rage Septimus snatches a young thief, Satia, from the streets.
